If a church has a cross on the front of it, does that make it a Christian church? Does having a Pastor instead of a Priest mean that Jesus is being honored?
I have come to the conclusion that there exists a great deal of evils and wrong doctrine being taught in the name of Christ. If I may create a term, it is in fact Christless. The “gospel” that is preached by most television preachers and in the mega churches resembles nothing of the true gospel of Jesus Christ.
There is a pervasive disease of materialism that has infected the American church. Every single time I speak to a person about Christ, at some point and time they reveal something that they saw on TV from a preacher asking for money and promising to send a “ten-fold” return.
This idea that somehow God’s sole purpose for humans, is to bless us will all the corporeal and temporal things we desire, is complete blasphemy and utter heresy. Let me be perfectly clear about this.
- Jesus Christ did not die to give you perfect health.
- Jesus Christ did not die to take away all your stress.
- Jesus Christ did not die so that you could have your dream job.
- Jesus Christ did not die to give you a huge bank account.
- Jesus Christ did not die in order to eliminate all hardship from your life.
- Jesus Christ did not die so that you can clear any check you write, as long as you do it “in faith”.
- Jesus Christ did not die so that you could retire at 50 instead of 65.
- Jesus Christ did not die so that you could have jet skis, purebred dogs, or a vacation home.
Jesus Christ died so that the dead would be made alive.
Jesus preached in fact the exact opposite of what we hear from leaders like Joel Osteen, Rick Warren, Bernard Jordan, Kenneth Copeland and Creflo Dollar. Those are merely the tip of the iceberg of greed. Let us look at what Jesus, the man who these men claim to follow, had to say about the things of this life. In Luke 9:23 it says, “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
Jesus makes it clear. If you claim to be a Christian, then you do not live for yourself, you live for Him because it is by Him that you live.
Friends,
If you have been attending a church, and you have never felt convicted by any of the preaching; you need to run away while you still have legs before your spiritual comfort level lulls you to sleep and drags you to hell on a prosperity lined pillow.
I do not say this lightly. I have agonized over the wording of this post for some time now. In fact, it is the reason for the delay in posting.
I cannot stress enough Jesus’ purpose for coming here. He came like a lamb led to the slaughter for our sin. His sole purpose of coming to Earth was to die. That out of God’s love for us, He would send His only Son, to pay the death penalty for our sin; is the only gospel there is! Jesus died that we may live. It is in accepting that only by His grace towards us can we avoid the justice and holy wrath of the Almighty God.
Christianity is not about what God can do for me, it is about what God has already done for me. Prosperity preachers seek to use God to exalt themselves and for material gain. A true Christian seeks to be used of God and to give all exaltation to Him.

Well written and very purposeful. Thank you for sharing this in a season of financial uncertainty for so many. Your words have helped to clear my head and remind me that my faith does not guarantee my comfort. In fact, my faith tells me that I should expect some discomfort and grow through it.

Aaron, this is very well written and it is as much my disdain too, which you have written about.
The ultimate best life to live is not now, but in the future, in heaven.
How sad that many of the people you’ve mentioned and even those that ascribe to the same theology as those you mention too, adhere to and promote such a pursuit of health, wealth and prosperity, which will only be meaningless before a just and holy God when they give an account for their lives.
Michael Horton has written a book titled, Christless Christianity that I plan to read. Have you read it?
